You got it right Mr. Stephen King

April 30, 2009 - You got it right Mr. Stephen King!" By Joseph Parish. Time for a little humor folks. I am confident that there is just about no one in the western world who has not heard of Stephen King. Being an avid collector of Stephen King’s books I have managed to amass every first edition that was published including several with both a European and American version. I have always considered “The Stand” to be Mr. King’s best work so far. He stylishly managed to merge the unexpected and unusual with a genuine possibility for a climatic episode. It so happens that perchance Stephen was foreseeing in his imagination of this novel for it is highly possible that we are presently in the same state of affairs as the characters portrayed within his book. Here is a fictional piece that I recently wrote. It should be taken with a grain of salt. Click here

Bacteria can be present in snow

April 25, 2009 - "Bacteria can be present in snow" By Joseph Parish. Many people remember the tongue in cheek comments made concerning eating of yellow snow however, recent investigations have now reviewed that it is no longer merely the yellow snow which one should not digest. Current research that has been conducted is concluding that all the unique snowflakes which fall from above may possibly contain an abundance of potentially dangerous bacteria. Click here

April 24, 2009 - "Making Emergency Non Maple Flavored Syrup" By Joseph Parish. Maple syrup is derived from sap of the maple tree. It is sweet tasting substance which is often eaten on pancakes, French toast, waffles, or cornbread. It may sometimes be used as ingredients in cooking or baking, candy making or for preparation of deserts. Surprisingly it is also occasionally used for flavoring in the manufacture of beer. Maple syrup was initially used by Native American who instructed the early settlers in its use. Click here

April 21, 2009 - "What If a Blizzard Came - The making of a Blizzard Survival Bag" By Joseph Parish. Here you are driving in North Dakota in the middle of winter. You have the radio turned on and winter weather warnings are in effect for the complete state. The outside temperature is down around the 10 to 20 degree mark with wind speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour. You have been moving slowly at a snails pace since it is difficult to see ten feet in front of you. No other cars have been sighted for the last 40 minutes. Click here

Storage of your Drinking Water in an Emergency

April 20, 2009 - "Storage of your Drinking Water in an Emergency" By Joseph Parish. Most survivalists if solicited as to the primary item which they would store up on for an emergency it has to be water. You should always plan for at least one gallon of water per day per person. With this requirement for fresh drinking water in an emergency you should have some idea as to what you can store that water in. Click here

Canning that tasty Lobster

April 19, 2009 - "Canning that tasty Lobster" By Joseph Parish. During the Y2K scare I was determined to not only be really prepared but to do it in style. Now when I say really I mean really. I didn’t want to just survive. I wanted to do it in a style that I was accustomed to. I went out and purchased a 30 plus foot motor home specifically for Y2K and proceeded to equip it with the finer things in life. I stocked up on bottles of red and white wine (This was really a good excuse I think), cans of crab meat and of course lots of canned shrimp and lobster. It was not until later after Y2K that I discovered exactly how easy and economical it was to can my own lobsters in place of purchasing those cans which were already done. Click here

Freezing excess Cabbage the right way

April 18, 2009 - "Freezing excess Cabbage the right way" By Joseph Parish. Occasionally good deals come along and it becomes desirable to grab up a lot of a certain vegetable. This was the case with cabbage. However, lets face it no matter how much you like cabbage enough is enough. Jus the same when you are afforded the opportunity to find cabbage for ten cents per pound you want to store up as much as you can. Unfortunately if left alone the cabbage would go bad in a short period of time. Click here

Quick food storage camouflaging

April 15, 2009 - " Quick food storage camouflaging" By Joseph Parish. I am one of the privileged people that has a separate food storage area however many people lack the suitable space to stockpile even small quantities of food let alone to provide storage for a complete years supply. Their shelves and closets are required for necessary items such as clothing and dishes. This just does not leave extra places to put those cans of food. It is thus apparent that one must exercise their imagination to create a means for storing that extra food in the event that an emergency situation presents itself. Click here

Joe's Ten Essentials of Survival

April 14, 2009 - "Joe’s Ten Essentials of Survival" By Joseph Parish. We all have some sort of an idea what we would take with us if we were going to be stranded on a deserted island well you could look at the concept of survival preparation in the same light. As Y2K approached, I was determined not to take any chances and I was determined not to be forced to live a life of a pauper if events turned to the worst. I went out and purchased a 33-foot motor home just for Y2K. Stocked it properly with various foods including shrimp in the can, crab meat in the can and lobster in the can. As I said, I was going out in style. Several gallons of wine was purchased and stored within the motor home. In addition, I placed the normal array of survival foods and items in it. As the final hours rolled near I filled, the water tanks with fresh water and sat down to watch TV. Click here

Pirate stand-off at an end

April 13, 2009 - "Pirate stand-off at an end" By Joseph Parish. This is as it should be and it should have happened sooner. As most experienced military members will willingly relate it is a significant gain when you can let the element of surprise work in your favor. By this I mean you simply don’t wait pointlessly when you have a rescue operation in the works. Click here

Hourseradish from Field to Table

April 11, 2009 - "Horseradish from Field to Table" By Joseph Parish. Horseradish is cultivated for its dense, fleshy white, hard root. When ready for processing it displays a coarse yellowish-brown skin with a pale fleshy body. This member of the mustard family matures to about twelve inches long and is shaped somewhat as a carrot. The roots are usually absent of the characteristic pungent bite and aroma until the contained oil is released by grating and it then easily brings forth tears to ones eyes. When horseradish is prepared fresh from the root it has a much sharper zest than its commercially prepared cousin. Click here

April 9, 2009 - "Your Cadbury Easter Eggs are finished" By Joseph Parish. Here it is Easter time again and which of you do not remember the famous Cadbury Crème Egg usually given to you on Easter morning. The Cadbury Chocolate Egg was originally produced by a British company known as Cadbury Schweppes. How well we all recall the thick milk chocolate outer shell and the yellow and white filling that represented yolk of a real egg. Click here

What is a Survivalist?

April 9, 2009 - "What is a Survivalist?" When some people hears the word “survivalist”, instantaneously a portrait of a gun-toting, camouflaged burly man may come to mind. This is not surprising since Hollywood has painted these unique breeds of humans in a somewhat negative light. For instance, the 1990 movie Tremors, included in its list of characters Burt and Heather Gummer, a fanatical survivalist couple who had a basement stockpiled full of weaponry and other survival gear. In addition, there have been others since. However, what exactly is a survivalist and what benefits are there to being one? Click here

Warm up your winter with canning

April 8, 2009 - "Warm your winter with Canning" By Joseph Parish. I dare say there is no better way to spend weekends than canning local vegetables, peaches, berries or apples. For being a northern state Delaware winters are not really that bad weather wise. Here is the middle of December and our temperatures today were close to seventy degrees. Not bad at all for winter. Storage of Oil used for cooking

April 3, 2009 - "Storage of oil used for cooking" By Joseph Parish. It wasn’t too many years ago that I was employed at a local oil refinery. Not the kind of refinery which processed crude oil into oil which is used in our vehicles but rather the kind of refinery which makes cooking oil. This particular refinery specialized in soybean oil. My job there was to ensure that the product that was being made was top quality and completely fit for human consumption. Click here

April 2, 2009 - "Where are the Bees going?" By Joseph Parish. There has been a lot of talk lately as to what is happening to the bee population of the earth. Using the Reynold's Handi-Vac System

April 1, 2009 - "Using the Reynolds’s Handi-Vac System" By Joseph Parish. A while back I was fortunate enough to locate one of the Reynolds’s Handi-vac systems in our local Wal-Mart department store. It was not a costly item and so I decided to pay my ten dollars or so and give it a try. At the same time I put in another ten dollars for 9 gallon bags that are used in conjunction with the machine.
